New App Request: Netbird
As an alternative to tailscale, netbird performs the same function. A wireguard overlay network. With the benefit of being open source and free.
As such creates a secure tunnel between remote services which is useful as I have some services hosted locally and pull data over the internet.
There are two parts of netbird, one being the controller and the other is the client. In my opinion having the client installable is perfect but the addition of being able to host the controller would be welcomed.
In terms of resource usage, It has relatively low resource overhead from my own testing.

@Oppenheimer We have already launched Tailscale as beta, and the request is not stuck in limbo. You can read more about it here.
I understand that you feel things should move faster sometimes. But please know that we work as fast as we can. Our first priority is to keep the lights on and provide a bulletproof service with a strong and secure infrastructure. We are still a very small team and it will take longer for us to release new applications at times. I hope you can understand.

That wasn’t my intention at all, and I’m sorry if it came across that way.
I wasn’t implying that the request was stuck or ignored, nor criticizing the team’s pace. My point was purely factual: from the outside, it can sometimes be hard to tell where a project sits among many others, and I was simply acknowledging that it could be one item among a lot of priorities.
I fully understand the constraints of a small team and the need to prioritize stability, security, and keeping the core service rock-solid. That absolutely makes sense, and I appreciate the transparency around how things are progressing.

At a high level, having tools like Netbird or Tailscale available on Ultra.cc would obviously be a strong added value — there’s no real debate about that.
@ahmzais right to highlight the usefulness of a simple, efficient overlay network with low resource overhead.
That said, rather than introducing a new player like Netbird — which is still relatively young and naturally has a smaller community and less overall maturity — it would make more sense to clearly prioritize Tailscale.
The demand is already there, it is significant, the solution is well-proven, widely adopted, well documented, and benefits from a mature ecosystem and long-term production feedback.
More importantly, Tailscale has been an open topic for quite some time now. The last official response dates back roughly 7 months (as mentioned by @varg), which is objectively a long time and gives the impression of a request stuck in limbo, with no clear visibility on next steps.
More generally, users often receive polite and well-phrased replies, but without concrete commitments or timelines — whether on Tailscale or on other structural topics, such as increasing storage space at the same price point.
What many users are really looking for today is not additional ideas “under investigation”, but clear decisions, an explicit direction, and tangible progress within reasonable timeframes — not “maybe”, not “someday”, and not in two years.
In short: yes to Netbird-like solutions in general, but in the short to medium term, a clear stance and concrete progress on Tailscale would have a much stronger impact for the majority of users.
